Today I would like to tell you about a very special cultural event that took place yesterday in Dumaguete, Negros Oriental. Yesterday, 21 March 2024, our son-in-law Gary Webb had his first photo exhibition as a passionate photographer. Born in New Zealand, he lives and works in Dauin, Negros Oriental, where he found his artistic passion. The exhibition showcased a fascinating collection of black and white photographs capturing the daily lives of the people of Negros Oriental. From bustling cattle markets to tranquil coastal landscapes, Gary’s images told stories of humanity, tradition and beauty. In addition to local subjects, he also shows colour prints of people from northern India, which convey a deep appreciation for the cultural diversity of our world. Gary swears by his Leica M10-P as his camera of choice, but firmly believes that a simple smartphone camera can be the catalyst for a passion for photography. These images are just a taste of the forthcoming video that will bring his captivating images to life. The realisation of this remarkable exhibition was made possible by the support of the Foundation University Department of Fine Arts in Dumaguete. This prestigious institution offers programmes in the fine arts and is known for its dedicated faculty and diverse artistic opportunities. With its emphasis on creative development and practical training, the University has been instrumental in bringing Gary’s visionary artwork to the public. Many friends and familiar faces from Dumaguete and surrounding areas attended this special event at the Henry Resort in Dumaguete. It was an inspiring gathering of art lovers and supporters celebrating the beauty and power of photography. We are very proud of Gary’s passion and talent and look forward to continuing to follow and support him on his journey as a photographer. The exhibition is open daily from 1pm to 5pm at the Henry Resort, Dumaguete until 4 May 2024.

New pumping station ensures Dumaguete water supply amid El Niño

DUMAGUETE CITY – The newly inaugurated Pumping Station (PS) 21 and Transmission Pipe Bridge of the Metro Dumaguete Water (MDW) will boost the water supply of this Negros Oriental capital city, ensuring that it will not be affected by the El Niño. MDW chief operating officer Angelo David Berba made the assurance Friday after the ceremonial switch-on of the facility in Barangay Cadawinonan, which is connected to the transmission pipeline in Barangay Candauay. “The facility is projected to produce up to 3 million liters a day, benefiting more than 5,000 households or around 20,000 Dumagueteños in the areas of Batinguel, Taclobo, Motong, and Daro,” Berba said. He said the switching on of the PHP30-million pumping station, which became operational on Jan. 11, means that there would be plenty of water in this capital city amid the El Niño phenomenon. “In terms of the water table and the recharge rate, we have more than enough water as our source is coming from nearby Valencia town with underground systems flowing to Dumaguete,” Berba said. Before the construction of PS 21, he said, the MDW was generating up to 45 million liters per day, depending on the requirement of customers. As of last year, about 95 percent were already being supplied by the MDW, he said, admitting a “shortage” of water supply during peak hours. Meanwhile, another pumping station located in Barangay Talay here is expected to be operational this year to fully satisfy the requirements of the city, he said. “This is proof of our commitment to excellence and the welfare of the community we serve. It represents a vital step forward in ensuring the sustainable provision of clean and safe water for the people of Dumaguete City. Moreover, it is only one of the multiple joint initiatives with DCWD (Dumaguete City Water District) that are lined up for 2024 and onwards,” Berba said. Operating since February 2021, the MDW is the joint venture company of DCWD and Metro Pacific Water. The joint venture aims to provide improved water services to Dumaguete and nearby communities. Anyone familiar with the public market in Dumaguete City will know what I mean by ‘snack & delicacies mile’. Here the interested visitor will find some chess players from morning to evening near the entrance on the side of the Holy Child Hospital. At these small stalls with seating and a table facing the street, market-goers can also get hot and cold drinks and savour baked goods and delicacies.
