Have you ever experienced the joy of kids gathering at your doorstep, harmonizing Christmas carols with enthusiasm? If so, you’ve likely encountered the Filipino tradition of “namamasko po”!

In the Philippines, Christmas caroling involves groups of children visiting homes to serenade residents with festive tunes. These young carolers often bring handmade musical instruments, enhancing the charm of their short performances. Popular songs include classics like “Jingle Bells,” “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” and “Feliz Navidad.”

Traditionally, homeowners may express appreciation for the carolers’ efforts by offering a token of gratitude, typically in the form of money (even coins will suffice) or food. While it’s not obligatory, it’s a heartfelt way to reciprocate the joy. Homeowners commonly give amounts ranging from P10 to P50 for children, while adults with elaborate performances and props may receive P100 and above. In cases where carolers are part of organizations seeking donations for a cause, a more substantial contribution is often appreciated.
