Set against the picturesque backdrop of Tambobo Bay in Siaton, Negros Oriental, this is an idyllic view of the Philippine coast. In the foreground, a dog relaxes in the sun, while in the background, the bustling scene of the harbour comes to life. The calm waters of Tambobo Bay provide a safe anchorage for a variety of boats. Fishing boats are moored at the quay, ready to bring in their daily catch and enliven the fish market. Next to them, many sailing yachts bob on the gentle waves, their elegant masts and sails swaying in the breeze.     A small outrigger boat, known as a banca, glides skilfully through the water as it rows up from one of the sailing yachts. It is on its way to run errands and adds an extra touch of activity and movement to the scene. Tambobo Bay is not only a picturesque postcard scene, it is also a vibrant centre of local life and commerce. As well as providing shelter from the elements, the bay offers rich fishing grounds and opportunities for recreational activities such as sailing and snorkelling. This harmonious interplay between man and nature reflects the rich cultural and ecological diversity of the Philippines. Tambobo Bay remains a timeless jewel of the coastal landscape, enchanting locals and visitors alike with its beauty and vibrancy.   See the video about Tambobo Bay: TAMBOBO BAY in SIATON – Negros Oriental

The USAID’s Fish Right Program, launched in 2018 in collaboration with the Philippine government and BFAR, aims to rejuvenate fishery resources in southern Negros. As the project concludes next month, local partners and stakeholders are empowered for sustainability.     Dr. Hilconida Calumpong, the project coordinator, handed over scuba diving equipment to Governor Roel Degamo for regular monitoring. The program covers eleven coastal municipalities, focusing on capacity-building through training and assistance from various entities like Silliman University and DOLE. I nitiatives include income-generating projects for fishermen’s families and interventions to address post-harvest losses. The program also targets the reduction of illegal fishing activities, fostering a sense of ownership in coastal communities for long-term marine biodiversity conservation.

Water contributes greatly to improvements and growth in the many aspects of our lives both personal and social across the globe. It has served as a source of power economically as well as personally. In the Philippines, water shortage is a public concern. Just recently the quest for the center of excellence for water management in the entire Philippines was put up and we are proud to say that Negros Oriental is eyed as the water capital of the Philippines. On August 5, 2015 the province held its first Water Conference at the Silliman University to discuss and support Negros Oriental as it steps up to the challenge of being the water capital of the Philippines through sustainable development of its water resources and making water as the main source of its future progress.

Fish landing at Tambobo Bay in Siaton

Fish landing at Tambobo Bay in Siaton

On our exploratory trip along the Bonawon Coastal Highway from Zamboanguita to Siation in the province of Negros Oriental, we arrived at the local fishing port on Tambobo Bay towards the end. By chance, we were lucky enough to see fish being brought ashore during our visit. There were several fishmongers on site with their vehicles, buying up large quantities of freshly caught fish. [siteorigin_widget class=”WP_Widget_Media_Gallery”][/siteorigin_widget] We were also allowed to buy and take home five kilograms of two types of fish for our own use. It was a great experience to see how the large quantities of fish were sorted, weighed, packaged and sold. [siteorigin_widget class=”WP_Widget_Media_Gallery”][/siteorigin_widget]   I was able to capture the landing of fresh fish here in the fishing port of Siaton as part of the following video SIGHTS at BONAWON COASTAL HIGHWAY | Siation | Negros Oriental
