These resilient tropical shrubs, resembling vines, exhibit excellent drought tolerance, thrive in sunlight, and burst with vibrant colors. Flourishing effortlessly in regions with mild winters like California, Florida, Texas, Hawaii, and along the Gulf Coast, they also adapt well to container cultivation in other areas. Bougainvillea plants, marked by their vigorous growth, can become exuberant if not properly maintained; however, they reward with a spectacular display of colors almost year-round in warmer climates. Explore diverse ways to utilize bougainvillea in your landscaping: Groundcover Brilliance: Let bougainvillea spread as a vibrant, colorful groundcover, particularly on hillsides. Architectural Accents: Train them on trellises adjacent to buildings, providing an elegant wall covering. Container Cultivation: Prune and train bougainvillea for container growth. In regions below Zone 9, bring them indoors to a garage or greenhouse during winter, watering sparingly when they go dormant in colder temperatures. Versatile Display: Experiment with growing bougainvillea as bonsai or in hanging baskets. Opt for dwarf varieties like B. glabra or the Bambino family for more compact plants. Note: Hanging baskets require frequent watering and fertilization due to quick drying. Security Hedge: Leverage the thorny nature of bougainvillea as a practical and effective security hedge. Cautious Placement: Exercise caution when growing bougainvillea near buildings, as they may infiltrate cracks or under roofing, potentially causing damage. Appreciate the beauty of bougainvillea while incorporating these tips to ensure they thrive harmoniously in your chosen environment.

In every town and also in the markets of larger towns you will find a flower department. I mean the flower department with the cut flowers. This is where the cut flowers are made into bouquets, arrangements and even funeral decorations. By chance, about 13 years ago on a trip by car to the deepest province of Mindanao, I found the rose fields where the beautiful roses in our markets in Cagayan de Oro come from. These photos were taken at the market in Dumaguete. When we are there again, I will try to find out where the cut flowers come from.
